Central Nervous System Infection Pathogen Targeted Next-generation Sequencing (tNGS) Kit CapitalBio

Central Nervous System Infection Pathogen Targeted Next-generation Sequencing (tNGS) is an accurate detection method that combines the advantages of ultra-high multiplex target amplification and high-throughput sequencing technology. By extracting and enriching nucleic acids from cerebrospinal fluid, using the sequencing platform to sequence the pathogen's genes, and comparing and analyzing sequence information against a database, this kit can identify 115 types of central nervous system infection pathogens, as well as 34 drug-resistant genes/mutation sites, improving pathogen diagnosis efficiency significantly.

Features

(1) High sensitivity: The LOD can be as low as 10 copies/ml;

(2) Quick test: The turnaround time can be as fast as 16 h;

(3) More focused: the targets are closer to clinical infection-related diseases, validated in data of more than 10,000 samples.

Applicable Populations and Scenarios

It is suitable for the rapid diagnosis of central nervous system infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, brain abscess, and myelitis. Especially, it is suitable for the detection of common pathogens in non - critical, acute, severe, and difficult - to - diagnose central nervous system infection patients for whom traditional methods (such as culture and PCR) cannot identify the pathogens.

Background Information

Central nervous system (CNS) infections are complex disease with great potential for morbidity and mortality or even a certain proportion of permanent neurological sequelae, depending on the type of pathogen. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment have long been recognized as the most important factors in determining patient outcomes. However, given the overlapping clinical manifestations of infectious and noninfectious causes, as well as the limited performance of traditional diagnostic methods, anti-infective therapy is mostly empirical or delayed, leading to drug-related problems or increased mortality.

Conventional diagnostic techniques, including culture, antigen/antibody assays, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, have long been used for pathogen detection. Nevertheless, these traditional methods may fail to detect pathogens, and some methods are time-consuming, which can result in delayed diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Targeted NGS (tNGS), by employing ultra-multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and high- throughput sequencing technology, has proven helpful in identifying tens to hundreds of known pathogenic microorganisms, along with their virulence and/or resistance genes in the samples being analyzed. tNGS is increasingly garnering attention in clinical testing due to its lower sequencing cost, clear and broad pathogenic spectrum range, short turnaround time, and high sensitivity.
